MAJ Executive Director Job Description

The Michigan Association for Justice is seeking candidates for the position of Executive Director for dynamic and diverse statewide professional association of more than 1,500 members and a full time staff of 7 employees.  The Executive Director reports to the Executive Board and is responsible for the general administration and supervision of all affairs of the Association. 

The successful candidate should have excellent organizational and management skills, competency in budgeting and financial management, and significant experience in  membership and fund development.  Additional relevant experience in politics, public relations, legislative knowledge and exposure, and technology are preferred. The position requires genuine commitment to the mission of the organization and the work of its members. It entails statewide travel and the flexibility to attend professional commitments on evenings and weekends as required.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Executive Director is responsible for the general administration and supervision of all affairs of the Association under the guidelines set forth in the By-laws and under the policies established by the Executive Board.  These general and administrative duties shall encompass but are not limited to the following to be provided by the Executive Director or an appropriate staff member as directed by the Executive Director.


  • Maintain close liaison with the President, the Executive Committee and the Executive Board, including the responsibility for keeping them informed on matters of basic importance to the profession and the Association.
  • Supervise, monitor and evaluate the performance of all activities of the Association and of the staff.
  • Responsible for the hiring, firing yearly evaluations, salary increases and/or bonuses for all office personnel.
  • Establish a sound organizational structure for the Association’s staff.  Develop and maintain an employee policy manual.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance and work product of all contract personnel to ensure a work product consistent with and beneficial to MAJ policies and goals.
  • Assist the President in planning Board and Executive Committee meetings.
  • Develop policies and programs to be recommended to the officers and Board of Governors for decisions.
  • Assist the Executive Board in developing long range plans and objectives of the Association.
  • Supervise the creation, implementation and maintenance of a computer network.
  • Arrange and manage events including Continuing Legal Education programs, the Annual Convention, phonathons, and fundraisers,
  • Monitor and assist the work of MAJ committees and provide liaison between committees and the Executive Committee.
  • Establish relationships with AAJ and NATLE to maximize cooperation and efficiency and to gain information and ideas to further the Association’s success.
  • Prepare and file all lobbyists disclosure forms with the Secretary of State Elections Bureau.
  • Ensure that all activities of the Association are in compliance with the MAJ By-laws and /or laws governing 501(c)(6) and/or 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporations.


  • Formulate for submission to the Treasurer and Executive Committee a recommended budget for consideration by the Executive Board for the ensuing year.
  • Provide total financial management within the guidelines of the adopted budget, including planning, purchasing, receipts, disbursements, financial reports and analysis.
  • Prepare Treasurer’s Reports for Executive Board Meetings
  • Maintain financial records including IRS, JUSTICE PAC, James Tuck Memorial Scholarship & Educational Fund 501(c)(3), bank accounts, insurance policies, and investments.
  • Formulate for submission to the JUSTICE PAC Board a recommended JUSTICE PAC Budget for the ensuing election cycle.


  • Maintain membership records and administer dues collection
  • Develop and administer membership promotion and maintenance programs.
  • Implement, maintain and evaluate membership services.
  • Assist in all membership recruitment phonathons and events.

Public Relations/Education

  • Oversee all internal and external communications including mailings, website, publications, press releases, email notices, listservs, and social media.


  • Serve as ex-officio member of the JUSTICE PAC Board
  • Keep updated on state and national legislative and political activities which may affect the Association and its members.
  • Work with MAJ lobbyists and volunteers in lobbying, testifying, monitoring legislation and legislative hearings, and building coalitions.
  • Represent the Association at political meetings, events and fundraisers.
  • Participate in the screening of legislative candidates and present recommendations on JUSTICE PAC support to the JUSTICE PAC Board.
