2006 MAJ Helmet Safety Campaign
13 events and 3400 helmets in 06!
More than 13,500 helmets so far!
LANSING-- MAJ's annual state-wide MAJ Helmet Safety Campaign will consist of twelve 2006 MAJ Helmet Safety Campaign events, all over the state, from Adrian to Gladstone, from Traverse City to Hamtramck.
Last year proud MAJ member’s fit the Campaign’s 10,000th helmet, one of 3,100 helmets fitted at eleven separate events.
The MAJ Helmet Safety Campaign has received accolades from around the state, including a Special Tribute from Governor JenniferGranholm and the 93rd Legislature, as well as some individual lawmakers, declarations from the Mayors of Lansing, Pontiac and Gladstone, and an annual Public Service Award from the Crime Prevention Association of Michigan.
“The trial bar is in the business of helping people and preventing injuries by acting as the private sector enforcement of health and safety regulations, making certain that only safe products and services are out there in the marketplace, “explained MAJ President-Elect Jesse Reiter. “So preventing injuries through our Helmet Safety Campaign is a perfect fit for us.”
Each year since 1999 MTLA members pledge funds to be used for purchasing helmets. MAJ then organizes a series of helmet fitting events around the state where specially trained volunteers not only fit the helmets but also teach kids and their families the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet. MAJ volunteers then donate a Saturday to fitting the helmets.
“This year’s Campaign is on track to be one of the most successful yet,” Reiter noted. “MJA members are stepping up in record numbers to pledge fund for helmet purchases and to volunteer for the helmet fittings.”
MAJ Helmet Safety Events also include Bike Safety Rodeos, the MTLA Bike Inspection Station, door prizes including bike and bike safety equipment, and a myriad of other safety related programs. Last year more than 20 bicycles and hundreds of pieces of safety equipment were given away at MTLA events.
MAJ works with dozens of groups from all over the state to make the Helmet Safety Campaign a success each year. MAJ partners include local fire and police departments, hospitals, law firms, the National Safe Kids organization, the Kids Repair Program, community and faith based groups, the Boys and Girls Clubs and many others.
