On May 27, 2006 MTLA took our state-wide MTLA Helmet Safety Campaign to Traverse City.
The "Bicycle Safety Day" was held at the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office and worked with the Smith & Johnson law firm, and the Grand Traverse band tribal police and fire departments.
We set up a bike safety rodeo and a safety course. Police agencies gave demonstrations and lessons. The Grand Traverse Tribe also sent their fire ‘house’ on wheels, which is a mobile home that is outfitted as a training aid. The kids go in with an instructor, and learn fire safety, escape routes, checking doors, etc.
On June 3, 2006the second event was held in the Traverse City area, this one at the law offices of Smith & Johnson.
Over 300 helmets were fitted and more than 500 people attended. Kids enjoyed the bike safety rodeo course, a safety course, and police officers giving safety lessons and demonstrations. The Traverse City Police Department and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Deptartment were on hand. Motorcycle officers from the Traverse City Police Deptartment showed off for the kids. Smith & Johnson stepped up to provide food and drinks and everyone enjoyed the great weather.
