June 4, 2005

On June 4, 2005 about MTLA members and their families came out to Sterling Heights to volunteer for the MTLA Helmet Safety Campaign at the Macomb Bike Safety Fun Fair.

Michigan State Representative Steve Bieda (right) presented MTLA Vice President Jesse Reiter with a Special Tribute signed by Governor Granholm, Representative Bieda, and Senator Mickey Switalski, thanking MTLA for our successful Helmet Safety Campaign.

Sue Jane Smith, Trauma Coordinator for Children's Hospital of Detroit(center, in light blue), training MTLA volunteers to properly fit helmets. An improperly fitted helmet is not only less effective, it can be dangerous!

MTLA Vice President Jesse Reiter presenting Ryan Berritt of Fraser with a brand new bike for receiving the Honorary 10,000th MTLA Helmet!

MTLA Executive Board member Linda Turek applies a professional fit to this child's helmet.

MTLA Director of Communications Jesse Green being interviewed by the Macomb comminuty access television station.

The MTLA Bike Inspection and Repair Station did a brisk business. The Hon.
Jack Nolish, former MTLA Executive Board member and current Chief Magistrate for the Board of Workers' Compensation, Department of Labor and Economic Growth ran the station with some help from volunteers.

Families were lined up at the sign-in table 30 minutes before the event started. When the gates opened, the MTLA volunteers found themselves very busy.

The end of a very long, very hot, very successful MTLA Helmet Campaign fitting event.

Or is it?

Just as the trash was being collected and the tents struck, the Chanel 4 camera man arrived. He had locked his keys in his car and was running late....

So the MTLA crew set things up again and recruited some of the exiting kids to reconvene for one last scene. It was worth it! We made the Channel 4 news.
