Thomas Waun

September 2013 MAJ Pacesetter

Grand Blanc attorney Tom Waun’s first job out of law school was with a defense firm - Garan, Lucow, Miller.  “After working there for a few years and trying a number of cases, I found that my heart wasn’t in defending insurance companies.  I found a lot more satisfaction in representing injury victims, and I therefore became a plaintiff lawyer and have been one ever since,” stated Waun.

Waun joined MAJ in 1988 when he stopped doing defense work, has served twice on MAJ’s Executive Board and is currently the Treasurer.  “MAJ was a natural fit for my practice and I have been very happy with it ever since.  All plaintiff lawyers should belong to MAJ.  Membership access is a great resource from an information standpoint in the form of both listservers and seminars.  MAJ also, as a group, represents the interests of our individual practices and clients legislatively,” said Waun.

A monthly contributor to JUSTICE PAC, Waun believes that everybody who practices as a plaintiff’s personal injury attorney has a responsibility to do everything that they can do both legislatively and in the courts to protect the interests of their clients and their practices. “JUSTICE PAC is the primary vehicle through which we pool our resources to meet these goals.  JUSTICE PAC membership and contributions should be viewed as both a responsibility and a cost of doing business.  If we don’t work on these issues in support of our clients and practices, nobody will.”

Waun’s firm is a small, general practice personal injury firm which handles all different kinds of cases, including medical malpractice, legal malpractice, product liability, road defect claims, construction site accidents, premises liability and motor vehicle claims.  “I have tried a number of cases and have enjoyed them all.  The wins are a lot more satisfying than the losses and I’ve had my fair share of both.”

Outside of the practice of law, Waun coaches his kids’ soccer and basketball teams, and plays as much golf as possible.
